Jeff Lyon – "JD"
I am originally from Maywood, NJ. My father was an electrical contractor in northern NJ for over 20 years. This is where I got my first taste of construction. At a young age I can remember sitting in one of my dad’s vans sorting nuts and bolts for him. I eventually graduated to sweeping floors for his job sites. As a teenager, Dad taught me how to wire lights, switches, recess cans, outlet and wire an entire house. I enjoyed that so much. My father had me go work for a local general contractor when I was about 16 years old. At that age, you really start in the trenches, but I enjoyed it so much that is why I learned so much. I worked for a home builder and remodeler. I worked nights, weekends, school vacations, and all summer for the same builder until I went to college. Sometimes at night, my father and I would actually wire the houses that I built during the day. That was awesome!
After high school I attended Alfred State College in western NY. My father went to that college so I thought it was fitting that I go there as well. I graduated with a degree in Building Construction Technology after two years. I also took night classes in business. After college I moved to central North Carolina. I was hired with a large apartment builder in Durham, NC. My first position was called a “punch-out guy”. This is the guy that goes in a unit after all the subs have completed their jobs and fix the small things that need to be repaired before the building gets turned over to the leasing company. I moved up quickly to a Project Superintendent position within the company. I had the privilege to build 4 apartment communities that had over 350 apartments, a pool, pool house, community room and leasing office. As a superintendent I was able to touch on every aspect of the building process for these communities.
I left the apartment business to start my own company. My company started with small repairs and remodels jobs and took off from there. I soon had 3 to 5 employees at a time working for me. As the owner, I wore many hats. Not only did I work on the jobs but I also did the estimating, sales, ordering and payroll for my company. My company also got into new construction of porches, garages and additions. One of the great things about this business is that you get to meet a lot of different people and work on many different projects. My company had a good solid base of customers that were repeat clients through my years in business.
Having a family of my own, I decided to close my business after 16 years and move back to New Jersey to be closer to my family. I have the best wife I could ask for and two wonderful children. We have 1 boy and 1 girl. I hope to pass down all my experiences as a child to my son and daughter to help make them well rounded people as my parents did for me.
On The Spot Home Improvements was looking to hire a new project manager. Michael DeMarco, the owner, was actually a friend of my older brother when we all grew up in Maywood. I met with Michael and he welcomed me to OTS graciously. My experiences here at OTS have been great. Michael is true to his word and is determined to make each and every single client OTS has happy with their projects. Michael and his wife Piera DeMarco are truly a family company and I can see a continued relationship with OTS for years to come.
